The Wreck of the Gairlock is one of the most unique coastal views you can see in Taranaki, giving you a glimpse into history while surrounded by wild west coast scenery.
You’ll find the wreck on Weld Road Beach, about 15 minutes’ drive south of New Plymouth. The remains of this 1903 shipwreck sit partially submerged just offshore, with rusted metal bones scattered along the sand.
The walk to the wreck is short and easy, taking just 5–10 minutes from the Weld Road carpark. It’s the perfect stop if you’re road-tripping the Surf Highway or looking for somewhere different to stretch your legs.
📸 Photography tip: The wreck looks best at low tide, when more of the hull is visible. Sunrise or sunset adds an extra moody, dramatic feel—perfect for long exposure shots. Take care on slippery rocks and keep an eye on incoming waves.
