Tasman Lake is one of the most iconic viewpoints in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. Just a short drive from Mount Cook Village, the Tasman Lake track takes you to incredible views of the glacier-fed lake, the surrounding peaks, and floating icebergs.
From the carpark, it’s about a 25-minute hike to the lookout point—perfect for catching the colours of sunrise reflecting across the water. A few minutes into the walk you’ll reach a fork: take the track to the right toward the Tasman River. After a short scramble over some rocks you’ll reach the riverside, where you’ll find the best vantage point of the lake.
📸 Photography tip: Sunrise is the ideal time for light and colour, and you’ll avoid the crowds if you head out early. In winter, this area is part of the International Dark Sky Reserve, making it an amazing spot for astrophotography and Milky Way shots.
