Moki Tunnel is one of the most iconic stops along the Forgotten World Highway (SH43) — and for good reason.

This single-lane, 180-metre-long tunnel was hand-cut through solid rock in 1936 and is nicknamed the “Hobbit’s Hole” thanks to its narrow, slightly curved entrance that feels like stepping into Middle-earth.

🚗 Getting there: You’ll find it on State Highway 43, about halfway between Taumarunui and Stratford. There’s room to pull over on either side of the tunnel to take photos, but remember it’s still an active road — so watch for traffic before stepping out.

⏱️ How long to allow: You only need 5–10 minutes here, but it’s worth stopping to soak up the atmosphere and grab a few shots.

📸 Photography tip: The tunnel is dark inside, so a tripod or a steady hand helps if you want a crisp photo of the interior. If you’re filming or photographing a car driving through, position yourself safely at the entrance for a dramatic silhouette effect.
