Cathedral Cove is one of the most iconic spots in the Coromandel — a stunning beach that shows off some of the best coastal scenery New Zealand has to offer. It’s a must-visit for photographers and travellers alike.
The area is part of a protected marine reserve and is famous for its dramatic sea stacks, crystal-clear water, and the natural rock archway that frames the beach.
Getting there takes about an hour on foot (one way) from Hahei Beach, with sweeping ocean views along the trail. If hiking isn’t your thing, local boat tours also give you the chance to experience it from the water.
⚠️ Important: Parking is only available at the bottom of Grange Road. From there, walk up to the official track entrance at the top (15–20 minutes). Please don’t attempt the closed track — it’s unsafe and has caused accidents in the past. Another option is to use the privately owned Cathedral Cove Gateway Trail, which starts from a paid car park at 150 Lees Road, Hahei.
For photographers, Cathedral Cove is magic at both sunrise and sunset with a wide-angle lens. The Coromandel is also known for its dark skies, making it an incredible spot for astrophotography. Whether you’re into landscapes, seascapes, or night skies, you’ll find endless photo opportunities here.
