Tucked away in the hills of Arashiyama, Otagi Nenbutsu-ji feels like stumbling into a secret forest filled with quirky stone statues.

Over 1,200 little rakan statues, each with their own cheeky expressions and personalities, are scattered throughout the mossy temple grounds. It’s peaceful, a little whimsical, and way less crowded than the big-name spots.

Need-to-know:

  • Opening hours: 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM (last entry at 4:15 PM)

  • Entry fee: ¥500 for adults; children under 15 enter free

  • Getting there: It’s about a 35–40 minute walk from the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, passing through the charming Saga-Toriimoto street with its traditional thatched houses and serene

If you’re into quiet corners and off-the-beaten-path finds, this one’s pure magic.
