Hello Mallory

Watch as the DSNGR rolls into Silverton with aspens and the Grenadiers in the background. A kind reminder it is ILLEGAL to stand on the tracks and the County Sheriff does frequently monitor this area during the fall. If you stand on the tracks, the Sheriff WILL TICKET you. They know this is a popular spot for photography and patrol here frequently. All photos should be taken from a safe distance.

I will usually stand here to keep a very safe distance: https://maps.app.goo.gl/e5xqZGyEKphvxPN88

Check the Train Schedule Here: https://www.durangotrain.com/excursions/round-trip-silverton-train-tour/

  • During the fall there are two trains that run - steam and diesel. For the classic smoke stack photo, you want to photograph the STEAM train

  • For 2025 - There will be up to two steam departures depending on the date.  The Silverton Steam Train departs daily at 8:15 AM 9/8/25-10/19/25, 9:00AM 5/3/25-11/1/25 and usually a Diesel departure in between.

  • It takes ~4 hours for the train to reach Silverton after leaving Durango. The timing varies slightly, but usually can photograph between 11a-12p. I would be ready by 11ish because it can get really crowded.
