Trail length: approximately 6 kilometers round trip
Elevation gain: approximately 599 meters to the summit
Time required: approximately 4 hours round trip
Difficulty: moderate
Start point: Magose-toge Pass trailhead or Camp Inn Miyama
End point: summit of Binshiyama, featuring the "Elephant's Back" rock formation
Access: from Owase Station, take a bus to the Washige bus stop and walk to the Magose-toge Pass trailhead, or access via Camp Inn Miyama near the Choshi River

Trail Highlights

  • The hike begins on the historic Magose-toge Pass, part of the Kumano Kodo Iseji Route, known for its well-preserved stone-paved path winding through forests.

  • The Yonaki Jizo Statue along the trail is a cultural highlight, where travelers historically prayed for safe journeys and parents prayed for their children.

  • The summit of Binshiyama, at 599 meters, is surrounded by trees and offers limited views.

  • A short walk from the summit leads to the "Elephant's Back" rock, a massive formation resembling an elephant's back, which provides panoramic views of Owase City, Owase Bay, and surrounding mountains.

Notes

  • Trail conditions include steep ascents and descents, with some sections of stairs and uneven terrain.

  • The stone pavement can become slippery, especially after rain, so caution is advised.

  • Bring sufficient water and food as there are no facilities along the trail.

  • Wear appropriate hiking gear, including sturdy footwear.

  • Be aware of potential wildlife encounters, such as bears and hornets; carrying a bear bell is recommended.

  • The best time to visit is late autumn to winter for clearer air and fewer insects; avoid summer months due to heat and increased insect activity.

  • The "Elephant's Back" rock offers stunning views but lacks safety railings; exercise extreme caution when climbing.
