Appi Kogen Ski Resort is a place that holds a special spot for me—I spent a season here a few years ago, and it’s where I truly got to immerse myself in the Japanese ski experience. Known for its long, well-groomed trails and famously dry powder snow, Appi is one of Japan’s top ski destinations, and it really lives up to its tagline, “Be Happy in Appi.”

The resort has a mix of terrain that’s great for all skill levels. Beginners can enjoy wide, gentle slopes, while more experienced skiers and snowboarders will find steeper runs and off-piste areas to explore. One thing that stands out about Appi is the sheer length of its runs—some stretch over five kilometers, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the ride.

When I stayed there, one of the things I appreciated most was the efficient lift system and how quiet the slopes could be on weekdays. It felt like I had entire runs to myself at times. The resort is also well set up for après-ski, with an onsen to soak in after a day on the mountain and plenty of dining options offering local Iwate specialties.

The season gave me a chance to experience the best of Appi, from bluebird days carving through fresh powder to snowy evenings spent relaxing in the onsen. If you’re looking for a ski resort in Japan that combines great snow, long runs, and a relaxed vibe, Appi Kogen is a solid choice. It’s a place where you can take your time and really enjoy the mountain, just like I did during my season there.

Keep in mind: This part of Japan can be extremely cold and windy. Make sure to prepare for the extreme cold conditions!
