Tsurunoyu Onsen is the oldest hot spring inn in the Nyuto Onsen area of Akita Prefecture, with a history dating back to the 17th century. It’s well-known for its rustic atmosphere, traditional thatched-roof buildings, and mineral-rich milky white waters, which are believed to have therapeutic benefits.

Getting There:

  • By Train and Bus: From Tokyo, take the Akita Shinkansen to Tazawako Station, which takes about 3 hours. From there, a bus ride to Nyuto Onsen takes approximately 45 minutes. Some accommodations provide shuttle services from the bus stop, so it’s worth checking in advance.

  • By Car: If driving, it’s about a 1-hour journey from the Morioka Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway. Be cautious during winter as the roads can be snowy and challenging.

What to Expect:
Tsurunoyu features several baths, including a mixed-gender outdoor bath surrounded by natural scenery, as well as gender-specific indoor baths. The waters are rich in minerals and have a distinct milky white appearance. Staying overnight offers a full experience with traditional Japanese rooms, futon bedding, and kaiseki meals featuring local ingredients.

The onsen is particularly popular during winter when the snowy landscape creates a serene and picturesque setting. However, it’s a beautiful retreat in any season, from spring blossoms to autumn foliage.

Tips for Visitors:

  • Make reservations well in advance, as Tsurunoyu Onsen is highly popular and books up quickly.

  • Familiarize yourself with onsen etiquette, such as washing before entering the baths and keeping noise to a minimum.

  • Bring appropriate clothing and footwear, especially in winter, as the area can get very cold.

A visit to Tsurunoyu Onsen is more than just a soak; it’s an opportunity to experience traditional Japanese hot spring culture in a peaceful and timeless setting.

I highly recommend visiting this one in winter as it just hits different with the snow!
