Overview
The Naruto Whirlpools are a rare natural spectacle caused by the extreme tidal differences between the Seto Inland Sea and the Pacific Ocean. These powerful swirls, which can reach up to 20 meters wide, occur under the massive Naruto Bridge. They’ve inspired Japanese folklore, ukiyo-e prints, and even anime. Watching nature create something so intense and hypnotic is strangely calming—there’s nothing quite like it in Japan.
What to Expect
I walked along the Uzu no Michi walkway, which stretches under the bridge with glass floor panels. It was wild to look straight down and see the ocean spinning below my feet. The power of the water is unbelievable. I really want to go back and take the boat cruise. I think they are best viewed from sightseeing cruises because it gets you right next to the whirlpools. I imagine seeing them up close, hearing the roar and feeling the ocean move beneath you, would be an unforgettable experience.
