Kinniyany beach is not an ideal spot for swimming or extended leisure due to its affiliation with the local fishermen. Upon arrival, you'll immediately notice the distinct smell of dry fish in the air. Dry fish is often used in the Sri Lankan Cuisine and cherished by locals but less favored by visitors. ;-) Nonetheless this area offers a unique opportunity to witness firsthand the traditional method of drying fish directly on the beach.

But it's worth making a brief stop at Kinniyany if you happen to pass by in the morning. This is when you can observe the local fishermen working in harmony, pulling in their nets by hand with a rhythmic unity that's quite captivating.

BEST TIME TO VISIT: Morning is ideal, as this is when the fishermen are actively working.

DO ask for fresh shrimp if you enjoy them and have the opportunity to cook yourself. They're delicious.

DON'T stand there visibly holding your nose closed; this would be considered rude. Consider using a shawl if the scent is too strong for you. Embracing both good and bad odours is part of the traveling experience, so take it all in ;-)
