The muddy Canso Plane Crash hike offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity to see a crashed WWII bomber.

The Royal Canadian Air Force's Canso 11007 suffered engine failure shortly after taking off from Tofino on 10th February 1945. Amazingly, all 12 crew members survived, despite the plane being loaded with 400kg of bombs.

Although this 4km return trail isn’t technically challenging (it's mostly flat), it can get really muddy since the plane is located in a boggy area. Some boardwalk sections have been added in recent years to help with the footing.

That said, I’d definitely suggest bringing a hiking pole for extra balance and wearing clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty!

Park at the first parking lot on Radar Hill Road and walk back towards Pacific Rim Highway. Walk along the Multi-Use Trail beside the highway to reach the trailhead. The trail is marked by pink blazes all the way to the site of the plane crash.
