Location:

The Three Capes Track is located in Tasman National Park on Tasmania’s southeast coast. The track starts from Fortescue Bay, which is accessible via the sealed road off the Tasman Highway. Parking is available at the trailhead.

Hike length:

The full track is 46 km one-way and is usually completed over 3–4 days. It passes Cape Hauy, Cape Pillar and Cape Raoul, offering dramatic coastal views along the way. There are shorter day-walk options from Fortescue Bay for those not doing the full multi-day trek.

Difficulty Level:

Moderate to challenging — the track involves some steep climbs, uneven terrain and exposed sections. Suitable for walkers with a reasonable level of fitness, though multi-day hikers need to carry camping gear or stay in the park’s designated cabins.

Dogs allowed:

No, dogs are not permitted in Tasman National Park.

Entry cost / Park passes:

A valid parks pass is required for entry to Tasmania’s national parks. For example:

  • A Daily Pass (up to 24 hours): Per vehicle (up to 8 people) costs AUD $47.70. A per‑person pass (travelling by bus, cycle or on foot) costs AUD $23.85

  • A Holiday Pass (up to 2 months): Per vehicle (up to 8 people) costs AUD $95.50. Per person (travelling by bus/cycle/foot) costs AUD $47.75
This “holiday” option gives you access to all Tasmanian national parks for up to two months from the start date.
Note: Prices may change, so it’s best to check the official site before you go.

More information:

The Three Capes Track is renowned for its spectacular coastal scenery, towering cliffs, and sweeping ocean views. Walkers pass through eucalyptus forest, coastal heathlands, and boardwalk sections that protect sensitive environments. The track features well-constructed huts with bunks, toilets, and hot showers for multi-day hikers, making it accessible for those without camping gear.

Highlights along the track include:

  • Cape Hauy: dramatic cliffs and sea stacks, popular for photography.

  • Cape Pillar: the tallest sea cliffs in the southern hemisphere.

  • Cape Raoul: incredible dolerite columns and sweeping ocean views.

Bookings are required for overnight stays in the park’s cabins, which ensures the track remains sustainable and enjoyable for all visitors. Especially during peak season booking ahead is important!
