Wagner Vineyards is one of the oldest vineyards on Seneca Lake. It's the place to visit if you want to learn about wine or try some of the best dry wines in the country. They grow more Cabernet Franc than any other winery in the Finger Lakes and specialize in this varietal.
During our visit, John Pulos (who's also one of the top Titanic historians!) led an incredible tasting class that was like having access to a walking encyclopedia of wine knowledge.
He explained the history of grapes in France and the Finger Lakes, the differences between grape varieties, and why Wagner produces the best Merlot in the region thanks to their prime location on the east shore of Seneca Lake.
What to try:
Lone Oak Cabernet Franc 2022
Their exceptional Merlot
Meritage (made from three "perfect" grapes: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot)
Cost for a Tasting: $12 for 5 wines and an hour-and-a-half experience
Food: This is a great winery to visit for lunch and then a wine tasting after. Ginny Lee Cafe is right on site, which is a full restaurant serving sandwiches, appetizers, and personal pizzas. The outdoor seating has one of the best wide open views of Seneca Lake, especially beautiful when the wisteria is in bloom in mid-May!
