Just minutes from downtown, Surprise Corner is one of those quick stops that delivers a classic Banff view with almost no effort.
Located along Buffalo Street / Tunnel Mountain Road, it’s about a 5-minute drive from Banff Avenue, with a small parking area right across from the viewpoint. From there, it’s just a short walk with a few stairs to the platform where the view opens up — and it really does live up to the name.
From this angle, you get a perfect shot of the Fairmont Banff Springs, sitting right above the Bow River and framed by Sulphur Mountain. It’s one of the most photographed views in Banff, especially in the morning or golden hour when the light hits the hotel just right.
If you want to do more than just take a photo, this is also the starting point for the Hoodoos Trail, an easy-to-moderate walk that follows the Bow River toward the hoodoos, with multiple viewpoints along the way. You can also connect to longer trails from here if you feel like extending your hike.
It’s a quick stop — you can be in and out in 10–20 minutes — but it’s one of those places that gives you that “classic Banff” perspective without much effort.
You need a Park Pass.
