Just a short drive from Calgary, Barrier Lake is one of the most accessible mountain getaways in Kananaskis Country, known for its striking turquoise water and beautiful setting along Highway 40. The lake is actually a man-made reservoir created in the 1970s as part of a hydroelectric system, where water from the Kananaskis River is regulated before continuing downstream. Today, it’s a popular spot for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, picnicking, and lakeside walks, with calm water and mountain views that make it perfect for a relaxing day outdoors.
For those looking for more adventure, the Prairie View Trail begins right from the Barrier Lake day-use area. This 13 km round-trip hike climbs steadily through forest before opening to sweeping views over the lake, the rugged Front Ranges of the Rockies, and on clear days even the Alberta prairies far to the east. Because the area is located in Kananaskis Country, visitors need a Kananaskis Conservation Pass to park at the lake or trailhead.
