Víkurkirkja sits on a hill above the village of Vík and is one of the most recognizable landmarks on Iceland’s South Coast. While the church itself is beautiful, the reason most people stop here is for the views, from the hill you can look out over Vík, the black sand coastline, and toward Reynisdrangar on a clear day. There's a short, steep path behind the church that will give you even better views!

You can drive all the way up to the church, and there’s a small parking lot, making this an easy and quick stop. We noticed tour buses start to show up between 10am-10:30am, so keep this in mind when planning (tour buses seemed to make this a quick stop, only staying around 15-20 minutes!)

*Fun Fact: The church grounds are also used as an emergency shelter in the unlikely event of a Katla volcanic eruption, which is why it sits higher above the village.
