Located in East Iceland, Hengifoss is one of the tallest waterfalls in Iceland, and what makes it especially unique are the dark basalt layers and thin red clay bands running through the cliff behind it.

Getting here is straightforward and does not require a 4×4 or an F-road. The access road off Route 931 is gravel for a short stretch, but it’s suitable for a normal car. There is a paid parking area at the trailhead, and from there you hike up to the waterfall.

This is an amazing stop if you want something a bit more active that still feels very scenic and rewarding.

Here is the hike route :)
