Lake Hāwea felt like such a hidden gem and one of those true local favorites. It’s just a short drive from Wānaka, but way quieter and more low-key.

The water is that same unreal blue, the mountains are just as dramatic, but without the crowds. It feels more peaceful and a little more untouched.

You can keep it super simple here, walk along the lake, find a quiet little beach, go for a swim, or just hang out and take it all in. It’s also a great base if you want to explore more, but even just spending a few hours here feels worth it.

If staying the night, camp at Kidds Bush reserve campsite right on the lake.
