What is "La Llorona" about? The legend of La Llorona in Mexico tells of a beautiful woman who, after being betrayed or abandoned by her lover, drowns her children in despair. Realizing what she has done, she is overcome with grief and takes her own life. Condemned to wander the earth for eternity, she appears near rivers and lakes, weeping for her lost children. Her chilling cries — “¡Ay, mis hijos!” (“Oh, my children!”) — are said to bring misfortune or even death to those who hear her.
