Hikone Castle is a Japanese Edo-period Japanese castle located in the city of Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. It is considered the most significant historical building in Shiga. Constructed between 1603 and 1622 by Ii Naomasa, one of the most trusted generals of Tokugawa Ieyasu, it serves as an impressive reminder of Japan's feudal period. With its original tenshu (main keep) still intact, it is recognized as one of only twelve castles in the country with its original tenshu and one of five castles that are listed as a National Treasure. Visitors will be taken back in time as they explore the castle's unique architectural features and many structures, including watchtowers and dry moats. It also houses a Museum where visitors can learn more about the castle and its history.
