Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is a public park in the center of Hiroshima, Japan which serves as a memorial to victims of the atomic bomb of 1945. It is visited by millions of people each year, and hosts a number of iconic landmarks dedicated to the memories at the bombing. One of these landmarks is the A-Bomb Dome, an officially designated World Heritage Site located closest to the hypocenter of the nuclear bomb and left in its aftermath to memorialize the casualties. Other notable symbols in the park include the Children's Peace Monument, honoring those who died, and the Rest House. Every year on 6 August, the City of Hiroshima holds the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony to console the victims and pray for world peace. Later in the day, visitors participate in a Lantern ceremony to send off the spirits of the victims with floating lanterns. The park also houses the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, International Conference Center Hiroshima and Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall, dedicated to educating visitors about the effects of the bomb and remembering its victims.
