Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a charming mountainous region in Japan known for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses. These unique houses have steep thatched roofs that resemble hands in prayer and are designed to withstand heavy snowfall in the winter. Visitors can explore the largest village, Ogimachi, or opt for a more intimate experience in the smaller villages of Gokayama. Staying overnight in one of the farmhouse minshuku is a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
