The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Sabah is one of Malaysia’s most respected wildlife sanctuaries, dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned and injured orangutans. Set within 43 square kilometers of protected rainforest, it allows the apes to learn survival skills before being released back into the wild. Visitors can watch them during feeding sessions from a raised platform and sometimes spot juveniles at the outdoor nursery.

The center is easily combined with a visit to the nearby Sun Bear Conservation Centre. Arrive early for the 10 a.m. feeding session to see the orangutans at their most active and to avoid the tour crowds.
