A Famosa is one of Melaka’s most famous landmarks and among the oldest surviving European structures in Asia. Built by the Portuguese in 1511, only the small gatehouse, Porta de Santiago, remains today — a weathered stone arch that once formed part of a mighty coastal fortress. It stands near St. Paul’s Hill, within easy walking distance of other colonial sites.

Visitors come to see the ruins, read the plaques detailing Melaka’s colonial past, and enjoy the views of the surrounding heritage area. The site is open at all hours and easy to visit on foot. Early morning or late afternoon offers the best light and fewer tour groups.
