Message from Nicole Carter

Misti is a dormant volcano in southern Peru, towering over the city of Arequipa. With a height of 5,822 meters above sea level, it boasts a conical shape and two nested summit craters. Snow falls on its peak during the wet season, but doesn't stick around. Misti has a history of explosive eruptions, with the last significant ones occurring 2,000 years ago and in the 15th century. Despite being a popular landmark, Misti poses a serious threat to the city due to its proximity and potential hazards like mudflows and pyroclastic flows. Since 2005, efforts have been made to monitor and raise awareness about the volcano's risks.
