The Green-Wood Cemetery opened in 1838 and it is one of the oldest cemeteries in the United States and is a National Historic Landmark. The city decided to no longer bury people on the Island of Manhattan in fear of infectious diseases. They designed this park before Central Park and Prospect Park even existed and it was the number one attraction for families to visit. It is home to over 600,000 permanent residents, including many notable figures from the Revolutionary War, Civil War, and other periods of American history. The cemetery is also home to a variety of wildlife, including exotic birds. You will see green parrots flying around. Story goes they escaped a international bird expo. You can book a ride in a trolley or do guided walking tours.
