Munkaþverá Church is a beautiful and historic Christian monastery located in Eyjafjörður, Iceland. Built in 1844, this former Benedictine monastery was established around 1155 and was abolished when the country became Protestant in 1550. Today, the church stands as a memorial to its famous abbot, Níkulás Bergsson, who wrote a famous guidebook for pilgrims traveling from Northern Europe to Rome and Jerusalem. Home to many heroes of saga literature such as Víga-Glúms and Bergur Sokkason, Munkaþverá Church also pays tribute to Sighvatur Sturluson and his sons, who are believed to be buried there after their death at the Battle of Örlygsstaðir.
