Runkelstein Castle, also known as Schloss Runkelstein or Castel Roncolo, is a medieval fortress located on the Val Sarentino road. It sits on a rocky spur high above the roofs of Bolzano.
The castle was originally built by the Lords of Wangen and later underwent extensive renovations by the Vintler brothers, who added defensive walls, a moat, and stunning frescoes depicting literary themes. Over the years, the castle changed hands multiple times, experiencing neglect and damage until it was rediscovered during the Romanticism period. In 1880, Emperor Franz Josef restored the castle and gifted it to the city of Bozen.
