What it’s really like:
Village Stay Fiji is a community-run village stay (5 locations within Fiji) where you get to experience firsthand how the majority of Fijians live, or grew up in. 99% of your booking fee goes straight back into the village.
Expect to disconnect from your old life and experience the REAL Fiji.
You'll stay in very simple accommodation, eat home-cooked Fijian meals, have refreshing cold showers and get involved in local activities.
Electricity and internet connection are limited or nonexistent, so plan for basic facilities and bring a flashlight, power bank and bug spray.
Dress modestly by covering your shoulders, chest and knees. I wore a t-shirt with bike shorts, then a sulu (sarong). Do NOT wear resort clothes (bikinis, mini skirts, singlet/tank tops)
Remove shoes inside, ask before photographing people and be ready to join cultural activities like a kava ceremony or village tour to get the most from the experience.
Depending on which village you stay at, there might be cooking classes, horse riding, mountain climbing, snorkelling, river/sea/waterfall swimming, etc.
Village Stay Fiji has multiple locations, so check them all out on their website.
I last stayed here in January 2025.
