Description:
Svartifoss, meaning “Black Waterfall,” is one of the highlights of Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park. The waterfall is framed by dramatic black basalt columns that look like organ pipes, making it one of the most unique waterfalls in Iceland. To reach it, visitors hike about 1.5 km (1 mile) from the Skaftafell Visitor Centre along a well-marked trail. The hike takes around 45 minutes each way and passes a few smaller waterfalls before reaching Svartifoss. Because of its striking appearance, Svartifoss has inspired Icelandic architecture, including the design of Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavík.

Price:
Entrance to Svartifoss is free, but parking at Skaftafell Visitor Centre costs about 750 ISK ($5–6 USD). Guided glacier and hiking tours in Skaftafell, which may include Svartifoss, typically cost $100–150 USD per person.

⚠️ Caution: The trail to Svartifoss is open in winter but often icy. Spikes/microspikes are recommended for safe footing.
