Piazza del Popolo is a beautiful urban square located in the heart of Rome that has been around since ancient Roman times. It was designed by the architect Giuseppe Valadier in neoclassical style between 1811 and 1822 and contains numerous interesting sights, such as Giacomo Della Porta's fountain from 1572, a Flaminio Obelisk carved from Heliopolis during either Sety I or Rameses II's reign and two symmetrical Baroque-style churches by Carlo Rainaldi and Carlo Fontana. Visitors can marvel at the obelisk at the centre of the square, surrounded by fountains and flanked by a Carabinieri station with its own dome. There are also three streets which branch off from Piazza del Popolo - the Via del Corso, Via del Babuino and Via di Ripetta - each offering their own unique attractions. A must-see for visitors to Rome.
