Christchurch is compact and makes a great base for exploring the South Island. Pack layers and a waterproof jacket because the weather can change quickly, and remember you drive on the left with some rural roads unsealed. The city still shows earthquake-era rebuilding, so expect construction alongside creative highlights like the Cardboard Cathedral, the Botanic Gardens with Avon River punting, and the Riverside Market for excellent coffee and local food. Cards and contactless payments are widely accepted, tipping is minimal, and buying a local SIM at the airport makes navigation and bookings much easier.
