The Via Ferrata course at Engelberg Brunni is a good choice for climbing beginners and families.

The Brunnistöckli route is rated T2 and is relatively easy, a good introduction to via ferrata climbing with two suspension bridges adding to the fun. Plan for about 1 to 1-5 hour to complete this course.

For those seeking a bit more challenge, there are three difficult routes that provide a steeper and more thrilling climb.

This is a self-guided adventure activity with inherent risks. You should be familiar with climbing, the equipment, and how to evaluate dangers. Review safety info on the Brunni website before choosing this activity.

If you are new or unsure, you can book a Via Ferrata course with Engelberg Mountain Guide.

What is Via Ferrata?

With this type of climbing route, you wear a harness and clip into safely cables that are permanently secured to the rock.

You climb on the rock using iron rungs, ladders and other foot and handholds, making it somewhat easier than traditional rock climbing. The routes often include highwires and suspension bridges that can be safely done since you are clipped in.

Renting Equipment

You can rent Via Ferrata sets (helmet and harness) at the Kräuter mountain hut (kiosk) at the Härlisee lake near the chair lift station. You must reserve at least one day in advance on their website.

They have Via Ferrata sets for children, but they must weight at least 40kg or the fall brake does not engage.

You should wear sturdy shoes and comfortable active wear suitable for rock climbing.

Other activities here

If some of your group doesn't want to climb, there are lots of other fun activities here, including the Barefoot Tickle Path (right next to where you rent the equipment), Treasure Hunt Trails, and summer toboggan and big playground at Ristis middle station.

How to get there

The Brunni Via Ferrata route are on the mountain, reached by a cable car and chair lift. The Brunni cable car station is located at Wydenstr 55, Engelberg

By train: Take a train to Engelberg (43 mins from Lucerne). Then Bus 300 to the Engelberg, Brunnibahnen stop (5 min ride) or walk 25 mins. The bus is coordinated with the train arrival.

Cable Car Tickets

Once your reach the cable car station, you need to buy a round trip ticket to Brünnihütte, where the Via Ferrata is located. This ticket includes the Brunni-Ristis cable car and Risti-Härzlisee chair lift.

Discounts: The mountain transport is free with the Lucerne Tell Pass and discounted with the Swiss Travel Pass and Swiss Half Fare Card.

If you plan to hike afterwards, you may be able to purchase a cheaper ticket. Inform the ticket booth of your plans and they will sell you the correct ticket.
