Just minutes from downtown Campbell River, Elk Falls Provincial Park is one of Vancouver Island’s most dramatic natural landmarks — a thundering waterfall framed by towering evergreens, mossy trails, and a heart-stopping suspension bridge that floats high above the canyon.

This is a place where you can feel nature’s power up close — the mist rising from the falls, the roar echoing through the gorge, and the steady calm of the old-growth forest all around you.

The main attraction, Elk Falls, plunges roughly 25 meters into a rugged canyon below. From the parking lot, it’s an easy 1.2 km walk to the viewing platforms and suspension bridge. The path winds through lush forest — a cool, shaded walk that’s perfect on a hot day.

The suspension bridge, completed in 2015, offers breathtaking views straight down the canyon. It’s sturdy but thrilling, giving you that “floating in midair” feeling as the falls thunder below.

For a quieter experience, explore the Millennium Trail Loop or the Elk Falls Viewpoint Trail, both offering peaceful walks along the Campbell River with picnic spots scattered throughout.

  • Waterfall Viewing: Multiple viewpoints and the suspension bridge for incredible photos.

  • Hiking: Choose from short loops to longer forest trails (1–6 km).

  • Fishing: Campbell River is world-famous for its salmon runs — bring your rod if you’re licensed.

  • Picnicking: Tables near the parking area and along the trail.

  • Camping: The park offers a well-maintained campground with 122 sites, showers, and fire pits — ideal for tents, campers, or RVs.

  • Trail Distance: 1.2 km to the main falls (2.5 km return)

  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate (a few stairs and short inclines)

  • Location: 2 km from Campbell River on Highway 28

  • Facilities: Washrooms, picnic areas, parking, and interpretive signs

  • Accessibility: The first section of the trail is wheelchair-accessible to the first viewing platform

Go early in the morning or later in the evening for the best light and fewer crowds. In spring, when the snowmelt is high, the waterfall is at its most powerful — it’s truly unforgettable.
