If you want to experience the heart of Amman, the Citadel is the place to be. Sitting proudly on one of the city’s highest hills, the Amman Citadel is like a time machine, transporting you from the present day straight into thousands of years of history. It’s one of my personal favorite spots in the city, and every time I visit, I discover something new.
As you wander through the Citadel, you’ll feel the energy of civilizations that once called this hill home. The ancient Romans, Byzantines, and even the Umayyads have left their mark here. One of the coolest things about the Citadel is how close you feel to the action. Unlike some other historical sites, this one is right in the heart of Amman, so you’re never far from the city’s vibrant life. After soaking in the history, it’s so easy to stroll down to Rainbow Street for a coffee or a bite to eat, or explore the nearby souks for some local shopping.
My tip? Give yourself some time to just sit and let the history wash over you. The Citadel is more than just a place to snap photos—it’s a chance to connect with the past and reflect on how far the city has come. And if you’re lucky, you might even get a glimpse of Amman’s famous sunset. Trust me, it’s one you’ll remember.
Temple of Hercules
The Temple of Hercules is the Citadel’s centerpiece, and it’s one of the first things you’ll notice when you arrive. The imposing columns of this Roman-era temple, once dedicated to the mighty Hercules, still stand strong despite the centuries. While much of the temple is in ruins, the remaining columns—especially the one towering at 10 meters—offer a glimpse into its past grandeur. If you stand next to the column and look out over the city, you can almost feel what it would have been like when this temple was the heart of a bustling Roman city.
You’ll also find a carved hand of Hercules here, which is one of the most famous relics of the site. It’s believed to have been part of a statue of the god, and it’s fascinating to imagine how it once looked in its full glory. Don’t forget to take a moment to appreciate the breathtaking views of Amman from here—it’s a perfect spot for a photo!
