Huka Falls near Taupō is one of the country’s most powerful waterfalls, where the Waikato River is forced through a narrow gorge before plunging down in a surge of bright turquoise water. Despite being only about 11 meters high, the sheer volume and speed make it incredibly impressive.

It’s an easy stop with short walking tracks and viewpoints right above the falls, so you can experience the force up close without much effort, making it a must see on any North Island route.
