READ: Why Route 66 Passes Through Albuquerque and Santa Fe?

This is the only major route detour that gives you two options. Albuquerque or Santa Fe.

The alignment of Route 66 through New Mexico has undergone several changes since its inception. Initially, the route took a northern path from Santa Rosa, to Las Vegas, to Santa Fe and Albuquerque, following existing roads and connecting key towns. However, in 1927, a political decision led to the construction of a more direct route between Santa Rosa and Albuquerque, bypassing Santa Fe. This new alignment, known as the "Santa Fe Cut-off," was completed in 1937 and became the primary path for Route 66 through New Mexico. Personally, I recommend skipping Clines Corner and electing to take the Santa Fe route through Las Vegas NM, as Santa Fe is a beautiful town and the route will still lead you to Albuquerque.

Historic Plaza Hotel – Las Vegas, NM

Right on the town’s central plaza, the Historic Plaza Hotel is a beautifully restored landmark that’s been welcoming travelers since 1882. Built during the height of the railroad boom, it blends Victorian elegance with Southwestern charm — tall windows, high ceilings, and a lobby that feels like a step back in time. Even if you don’t spend the night, it’s worth dropping in for a meal, a drink in the saloon, or simply to soak up the atmosphere and views over the plaza.
