Gullfoss Waterfall is one of the most iconic and powerful waterfalls in Iceland, and a must-see stop on the popular Golden Circle route in Southwest Iceland. The name Gullfoss means Golden Falls, and it's easy to see why. This stunning natural wonder is fed by the Hvítá River, which flows from the Langjökull glacier and cuts through Iceland’s rugged landscape before dramatically plunging into the canyon below.

Gullfoss is not just one waterfall but two. The first drop is around 11 meters high, followed by a second, more dramatic plunge of 21 meters. These two stages come together to create a powerful and unforgettable sight, especially during summer when the flow reaches up to 140 cubic meters per second. In winter, the water slows slightly to about 109 cubic meters per second, but it remains an awe-inspiring experience year-round.

The waterfall is flanked by canyon walls that rise up to 70 meters high, forming the majestic Gullfossgjúfur canyon. This deep gorge was carved by glacial floods at the end of the last ice age and adds to the dramatic setting of the falls.

Once you park your car, you will already begin to hear the thunder of the waterfall from a distance. There are well-maintained walking paths that lead you to several viewpoints, including one that brings you very close to the waterfall. If you're visiting in summer, bring waterproof clothing—the mist is refreshing but can leave you soaked.

The Gullfoss Visitor Center is located right next to the parking area and includes a cozy café where you can warm up with hot soup, sandwiches, salads, or a slice of homemade cake. The café is a great place to relax after your walk. The visitor center also has a gift shop with locally made wool products and Icelandic souvenirs.

This parking area is also a meeting point for snowmobiling tours, so you might spot some huge super jeeps getting ready to head up to the nearby Langjökull glacier. It’s a fun place not just to visit the waterfall, but also to see some of Iceland’s adventure culture in action.

Whether you come for the view, the power of nature, or just a peaceful moment by the falls, Gullfoss is an unforgettable stop on your journey through Iceland.
