Saturday: “Water + Forest” Day

Morning – Allsters Herrgård:

Spend the morning exploring the grounds around Alsters herrgård. Even without entering the manor, the area offers beautiful parkland, nature trails, and lakeside scenery overlooking Vänern. There are several easy walking paths nearby and a popular "Lekskogen" play area with wooden sculptures that children enjoy.

Why it's great for kids:

  • Free outdoor experience

  • Nature trails and open lawns

  • Woodland play areas

  • Wildlife spotting and lake views

Recommended time: 9:30–11:00

Logistics: Free parking.

Lunch – Picnic at Skutberget friluftsområde

5min drive. Grill your korv at a fire pit, or use Skutbergsgården’s café.

After lunch – Trollstigen 800m

Short forest loop with carved wooden trolls. Flat, stroller-friendly. Ends at new utkikstorn with Vänern views.

Kid win: They’ll hike 1km if there are trolls. Toilets at Skutbergsgården.

Afternoon/Evening – Bomstadbaden

Värmland’s warmest water. Huge sandy beach + playground + minigolf.

Kid win: Shallow 40m out. Ice cream kiosk.

Logistics: Parking 20kr/day, but beach is free. Toilets + outdoor showers. Leave by 16:00 before dinner.

Dinner option: Bomstadbaden Kiosk + bring your own grill

   0kr, 2min walk

 Most families just do “badplats dinner”: grill korv at Bomstad’s fire pits, kiosk fries + ice cream for backup.

Why kids love it: Eat in swimsuits, throw rocks between bites. Toilets + picnic tables right there.

Parent win: Zero extra driving. Open late June-Aug

Sunday: “City Nature + Ice Cream” Day

Morning – Mariebergsskogen

Park by Lillskogen. Feed goats, do the 1.2km “Lillskogen” loop — perfect for balance bikes. Playground + Naturum museum if it rains.

Kid win: Animals + forest + playground in one spot.

Logistics: Free parking, toilets everywhere. Café opens 10:00.

Lunch – I2-skogen

10min drive. Park at I2-gården. 3km of wide gravel paths through old military forest. WWII bunkers to peek in. Pack sandwiches for lunch.

Kid win: Totally flat. Safe for kids to bike/scoot ahead. Bring blueberries box in August.

Logistics: Free parking. No toilets, so use Mariebergsskogen before.

Afternoon – Museum Park / Sandgrundsudden + Stora Torget fountains

End in town. Let kids run the “Sola” statue loop 600m.

Kid win: Glass/kiosk at every corner.

Logistics: Park P-hus Drott 2hr free. Toilets in Mitt i City + museum lobby.

Dinner option in city: Pinchos Karlstad

   Drottninggatan, 4min walk

   Tapas-style small plates ordered on app. Circus vibe + kids order from phone = novelty.

   Why kids love it: Mini portions, dessert app, cool atmosphere, free popcorn.

   Parent win: Can order 1-2 plates at a time so no waste. ∼60-90kr/plate.
