This group hike into Mafate is one of the easiest ways to reach the isolated interior — without staying overnight. You start with a 30-minute 4x4 ride up the bed of Rivière des Galets — a rocky, off-road path that regular cars can’t take. It’s dusty, bumpy, and kind of fun. You’ll be with a French-speaking mountain guide and a small group.

Once dropped at the trailhead, the hike begins with a footbridge over a canyon and then climbs steadily to Îlet Cayenne, one of the inhabited hamlets in the cirque. The views open up fast — deep ravines, sharp ridgelines, and that feeling of being cut off from the rest of the world. There's a basin stop to cool your feet, then a picnic lunch spot in the heart of Mafate before circling back. The whole walk is about 12 km (7.5 miles), with several river crossings — your feet will get wet.

It’s a well-paced day, but you’ll need to carry your own lunch, water (2L+), and gear. The trail isn’t technical, but it’s exposed, humid, and uneven — solid shoes and French comprehension are both necessary.

Local tip: If rains have closed the 4x4 track, they’ll offer an alternate hike along the rim of Mafate from Le Maïdo. Ask in advance if you’re coming in cyclone season.
