If you’re already in Cilaos and want something dramatic but doable, the hike to La Chapelle is a solid pick. It's shorter than the Mafate treks, but still adventurous enough to make you feel like you've earned the views — and the swim.
You’ll follow a river gorge through a steep-sided canyon lined with lush vegetation and vertical rock walls. The trail winds gently at first, then gets rocky and uneven, with stream crossings and some scrambling. Eventually, you reach La Chapelle, a natural tunnel-like rock formation carved by volcanic erosion. It looks like a hidden cathedral.
You’ll need decent shoes with grip. Parts of the trail can be slippery and narrow. Not for anyone with mobility issues or a fear of enclosed spaces. That said, it’s a great intro to Réunion’s wild side without needing a full-day commitment.
👉 Local tip: There’s little shade once you’re in the gorge.
