Famous for its permanent exhibition on Yayoi Kusama, one of Japan’s most iconic artists and a Matsumoto native. The museum also hosts rotating exhibitions, and when purchasing your ticket, you’ll be asked whether you want to visit only the permanent collection or get a combined ticket that includes the current timed exhibition. You can check their official website to see what’s currently on display.

There’s also a hidden little corner that really surprised me—a small library on the 3rd floor with a wide range of books and journals on Japanese and international art (mostly Japanese). It’s a quiet space where you can sit down and browse for 20–30 minutes without any rush, and I found it unexpectedly enjoyable.

If you’re carrying bags, there’s a locker area on the 1st floor to the right of the gift shop. You’ll need a 100 yen coin to use it, but you’ll get it back when you unlock it—definitely makes the visit more comfortable.
