🌋 Berserkjahraun & Red Craters

🗺️ How to Get There:
Berserkjahraun is located along Route 54, between Stykkishólmur and Grundarfjörður. To access its red craters, take the gravel road 558 through the lava field, it’s bumpy but generally passable in summer with a 2WD if dry (4x4 recommended).
The red craters are located on small hills off the main track, often visible from the road. There are pullouts along the way to launch a drone safely.

📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
June to September is best, with dry roads and clear views. In autumn, moss colors deepen and contrast dramatically with the red volcanic cones. Avoid in winter or after heavy rain, roads can be muddy or impassable.

📸 Photography Tips

Best time of day:

• Golden hour to bring out the warmth in the red craters and texture in the moss

• Midday also works well for overhead drone shots with strong contrast

Recommended gear:

• Drone is a must, ground-level views don’t reveal the scale or color geometry

• Wide-angle lens for low shots across the lava plains

• Telephoto for isolating crater ridges or distant mountain peaks

Composition ideas:

• Fly overhead to capture the red craters surrounded by black lava and green moss

• Follow the winding gravel track as a leading line through the chaos

• Combine lone craters with the ocean or Snæfellsjökull in the distance

• Shoot the shadows and ridges late in the day for high contrast abstract patterns
