Okarito Beach is a beautiful wild and rugged beach located in the South Westland region of New Zealand.

It is home to the Okarito Lagoon, one of the largest unspoilt wetlands in New Zealand and an important breeding ground for native birds such as the Kotuku white heron. You can enjoy a peaceful stroll along the beach (literally you will probably be the only one there) or explore the surrounding trails, and explore the old wharf for some fascinating historical information.

Kayaking and boat cruises are popular ways to explore the lagoon's abundant wildlife, and guided tours are available to gain insightful knowledge about the area. Whether seeking unique bird sightings, fishing, swimming, or an outdoor adventure, Okarito Beach has something for everyone.

Photography info: We stopped here at Okarito Beach for sunset on our way to Lake Matheson to stay the night. It is a beautiful and wild beach, with lots of drift wood and rocks along the shoreline. Even if you're not looking to take a photo it is just a great little spot to take a walk and get some fresh air. I used my wide angle lens (16-35mm) for these images.
