Your trip to La Réunion deserves to begin somewhere vibrant — and there’s no better place than the Saint-Paul Market. Held every Friday and Saturday on the town’s breezy oceanfront promenade, this sprawling open-air market is a feast for the senses and a window into Réunionnaise life.

We kicked off our trip here, bathing suits sneakily on under our clothes — beach-bound after the market — and already sweating from the island heat. The first thing that hit us? The scent. A swirl of vanilla, vetiver, grilled samosas, and ripe mangoes thick in the air. Bright pyramids of passionfruit. Sacks of turmeric. Charcoal-roasted corn.

And then, we found the freshly squeezed sugar cane juice stall — a vendor sliding thick stalks into an old-fashioned press, the liquid gushing into a plastic cup over crushed ice. Sweet, grassy, cold — and unforgettable.

👉 Local Tip: Best on Fridays and Saturdays. Get there before 9AM if you want the freshest produce and less crowded strolls. Some vendors pack up by noon.

👉 Bring cash for fresh juice, souvenirs, and snacks (€10–€30 typical spend)
👉 Hidden Gem: Don’t skip the handmade herbal infusions and Creole spice blends — especially "massalé," Réunion's answer to curry powder. Ask to smell before you buy!

Beyond food, you’ll find vibrant sarongs, raffia baskets, local jewelry, and even body oils infused with ylang-ylang and vanilla — perfect souvenirs that won’t collect dust at home.
