You’ll feel it as soon as you step out of the car — the ground radiates heat beneath your feet, and everything shimmers. Welcome to Plage de L’Étang-Salé, La Réunion’s most dramatic beach, where black volcanic sand stretches along the southwestern coast like something from another planet.

It’s the kind of place that stays with you — raw, wide open, wind-swept. The waves here are big and loud. You’ll see warning signs about strong currents, and they’re not kidding — this is not a swimming beach for everyone. But for walking, photographing, and just soaking in the island’s geological force? It's perfection.

We walked for ages, the black sand burning through our sandals, before finally cooling off near the natural rock pools further south, where kids splash safely and locals gather for weekend barbecues.

👉 Best: May–November for lighter swell and fewer storms

👉 Insider Tip: Bring water shoes or flip-flops you don’t mind overheating — the sand gets scorching by midday.
👉 Hidden Gem: Walk south toward the Forêt de l’Étang-Salé, a shaded pine forest perfect for picnics and nature walks. Few tourists venture that far.

The beach blends beautifully into the nearby town of L’Étang-Salé-les-Bains — grab a samosa or fruit sorbet after your walk and watch the sun drop into the ocean. Magic.
