💦 Litlanesfoss Waterfall
🗺️ How to Get There:
Located along the hiking trail to Hengifoss, just outside Egilsstaðir. From Route 1, take Road 931 to the Hengifoss parking lot. The well-marked trail begins there and takes about 30–40 minutes to reach Litlanesfoss, which appears midway to Hengifoss. The trail is uphill but manageable and clearly marked.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Best in late spring through early autumn when the trail is clear and the waterfall flow is strong. Autumn adds rich golden foliage around the cliffs. The trail is accessible in winter with caution, but may be icy or snow-covered.
📸 Photography Tips
Best time of day:
Afternoon light tends to shine directly into the canyon, illuminating both the waterfall and basalt columns. Overcast conditions are also great for balanced exposure and texture.
Recommended gear:
Wide-angle lens to fit the entire waterfall and basalt walls, tripod and ND filters for long exposures to smooth the water
Telephoto to isolate the water stream framed by columns and the basalt itself
Drones can be usefull here
Composition ideas:
Frame the falls vertically with the hexagonal basalt flanking both sides
Shoot from the trail above for a centered and symmetrical composition
Fly the drone into the canyon to be able to get closer to all the amazing basalt formations here
