The Pacific Rim road trip — surf in Tofino, storm-watch in Ucluelet, soak in Haida cedar saunas, hike the Juan de Fuca trail, and finish with high tea at the Fairmont Empress. This is the other side of BC their followers are dying to see.

Day 1

Description: Travel day, but a beautiful one. Morning ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay (1h40), then the 3-hour drive across the island to Tofino. The road cuts through rainforest and curves along Kennedy Lake in the final stretch — make yourself stop. Check into Surf Grove Campground if you're doing van life or Long Beach Lodge for the hotel experience. Dinner is early; you'll want to watch your first sunset over Cox Bay.

  • Tofino — arrive

  • Long Beach Lodge Resort — hotel (or Surf Grove Campground)

  • Cox Beach Lookout Trail — sunset

Day 2

Description: Your first full Tofino day. Rent a wetsuit and take a morning surf lesson at Chesterman Beach — it's the most beginner-friendly break on the island. Walk the length of the beach at low tide to reach Frank Island (accessible on foot only when the tide is out), then spend the afternoon wandering Tofino town: cedar galleries, boutique shops, local bakeries. End the day at Tonquin Beach for sunset — the locals' secret beach, only 10 minutes from town.

  • Chesterman Beach — morning surf

  • Tofino — town afternoon

  • Tonquin Beach — sunset

  • Pacific Sands Beach Resort — hotel

Day 3

Description: Day trip to Hot Springs Cove — a bucket-list boat journey. The 2-hour Zodiac ride north from Tofino takes you through whale territory (grey whales, orcas, humpbacks in season), then a 2km boardwalk through old-growth forest leads you to cliff-edge hot pools that tumble into the Pacific. It's one of those experiences you plan a whole trip around. Book early — tours sell out weeks ahead in summer.

  • Hot Spring Cove — all-day boat trip

Day 4

Description: Transfer day — Tofino to Ucluelet. Ucluelet is Tofino's quieter, rawer sister town, and the Wild Pacific Trail is the main event. Start at the Lighthouse Loop for dramatic cliff views of open Pacific, then pick up groceries and move into your retreat. Dinner in town, early bed — tomorrow is a drive day.

  • Ucluelet — arrive

  • Ucluelet Lighthouse Loop

  • Calmwater Retreat — hotel

Day 5

Description: The long haul south. You're crossing the island and driving the Juan de Fuca coast to Victoria — a 6-hour day with two essential stops. Sombrio Beach is a surfer's beach with a secret waterfall accessible at low tide (follow the cedar forest creek). Mystic Beach is down a 2km trail that ends at a sandy cove with a waterfall falling straight onto the sand. Plan the day around tides. Arrive Victoria in the evening for dinner.

  • Sombrio Beach

  • Mystic Beach

  • Lake Cowichan — lunch stop

  • Victoria — arrive

  • Fairmont Empress — hotel

Day 6

Description: Victoria day. The city is walkable, and you can see most of it in one long day. Start with sauna at Havn — floating on the water in Victoria's Inner Harbour, a Finnish-Canadian sauna experience that's become the must-do wellness spot in the city. Spend the afternoon wandering Fisherman's Wharf, Beacon Hill Park, and the Government Street stretch. Back to the Fairmont Empress for afternoon tea — the tradition since 1908. An underrated British colonial experience that locals still do for special occasions.

  • Havn Saunas — morning

  • Victoria — afternoon exploring

Day 7

Description: Last day — don't waste it on a rushed ferry. Take the 9am ferry from Swartz Bay to Salt Spring Island instead for a slow final day. Salt Spring is the hippie-artist-cheese-maker island where ex-Vancouverites go to disappear. Visit the Saturday market if your trip lines up, otherwise drive the quiet loop, hit a cheese farm, and take the evening ferry back to the mainland.

  • Salt Spring Island — full day

  • Victoria — return (or direct ferry back to Vancouver)
