šŸ—“ļø Best time to visit: Jul–Sep | early morning
ā±ļø Recommended time: one day or more

Starting near Girdwood, the Crow Pass Trailhead marks the beginning of one of Alaska’s most iconic backcountry routes. Leading into Chugach State Park, this trail offers a true wilderness experience with glaciers, alpine passes, and rugged river valleys.

šŸ’” Trail details:

  • Distance: ~37 km (23 miles, point-to-point)

  • Elevation gain: ~1,200 m (3,900 ft)

  • Time: 1–3 days

  • Difficulty: moderate to challenging

šŸ’” Why visit:

  • diverse landscapes: glaciers, waterfalls, tundra, and rivers

  • authentic backcountry adventure close to Anchorage

  • rich history as part of the historic Iditarod Trail

āš ļø Good to know:

  • river crossings can be challenging, especially after rain

  • bears frequent the area → carry bear spray

  • shuttle logistics needed for point-to-point hike

šŸ•ļø Extra tip:
Even if you don’t hike the full trail, a short out-and-back from the trailhead already delivers incredible views of glaciers and surrounding peaks. This trail isn’t recommended in wet conditions, even for those avoiding the river crossing. The cabin fills up quickly, especially in July and August. Reservations are required and can be made up to 180 days (~6 months) in advance. It’s available June through October (other times may be closed due to avalanche risk or poor conditions). Cost is $75 per night for up to 6 people. More info here: Crow Pass Cabin.

If you are not a big hiker, I would do just Crow Pass Cabin and back, even there, you will have an amazing views.
